Evolution of Nepalese Stock Market

 




       The history of the capital market in Nepal dates back to 1937 when Biratnagar Jute Mills Ltd and Nepal Bank Limited  floatation Shares were traded.

       Introduction of company act in 1964, the first issuance of government bond in 1964 and the establishment of securities exchange center ltd in 1976 were other significant development relating to capital market.

       Securities exchange center was established by joint effort of Nepal government and NepalRastra Bank.

       Exchange center was established in this country in an attempt to encourage growth in the capital markets.

       Capital markets also provide financial services, underwriting, brokering, managing public issue, developing markets for government bonds and other similar services.

       In 1993, securities exchange was converted to Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE).

       NEPSE is established under the company act, operating under securities exchange act, 1983.

       1994-Jan 13,  trading floor was opened for trading.

       NEPSE is the public company funded by government of Nepal, NRB, NIDC and members of NEPSE.

       Nepal government holds majority (58.66%) ownership in NEPSE.

       NRB, NIDC and NEPSE members have 34.6% , 6.12% and 0.62% ownership respectively.
