Development issues and challenges in BFIs in Nepal

Despite the long history of banking business as early as 1937, the liquidity and fund mismatch problem still serious. The blacklisted defaulters and dishonest defaulters can not be brought into legal process to settle the loans due to inability in making the role of commercial bench effective.Due to being unable in proper management of foreign remittances, it is mainly expended in consumption and necessary programmes yet to be formulated to channelise such savings to the productive sector.Human resource management in terms of position and incentives and of different work culture after merger has been challenging. Other various Issues are 

  • A specialised entity could not be established for agriculture and industry.
  • The districts with high poverty have not got special financing despite the announcement of refinancing at 1% interest rate to the BFIs providing special financing.
  • Due to illiteracy of large portion of population and lack of proper financial literacy programmes, a large portion of total population are unaware on special financing, financing to earthquake victim, financing through rural self-help fund.
  • The unmonitored and unsupervised increase of cooperatives has increased the risk to the financial system of the country.
